How to perform chest compressions BSLAP
Positioning for Chest Compressions
- Place them on a firm, flat surface (e.g., floor).
- Kneel beside them at chest level.
Hand Placement
- Place the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest (lower half of the sternum).
- Place your other hand on top, interlocking fingers.
- Keep arms straight and shoulders directly over hands.
Compression Technique
- Press down hard and fast (at least 5 cm but no more than 6 cm deep).
- Compress at a rate of 100–120 per minute (think of the beat of Stayin’ Alive).
- Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.
Continue Until Help Arrives
- If trained in rescue breaths, give 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths.
- If untrained or unwilling to give breaths, continue compression-only CPR until emergency services arrive.
