How to perform chest compressions BSLAP

Positioning for Chest Compressions

  • Place them on a firm, flat surface (e.g., floor).
  • Kneel beside them at chest level.

Hand Placement

  • Place the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest (lower half of the sternum).
  • Place your other hand on top, interlocking fingers.
  • Keep arms straight and shoulders directly over hands.

Compression Technique

  • Press down hard and fast (at least 5 cm but no more than 6 cm deep).
  • Compress at a rate of 100–120 per minute (think of the beat of Stayin’ Alive).
  • Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.

Continue Until Help Arrives

  • If trained in rescue breaths, give 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths.
  • If untrained or unwilling to give breaths, continue compression-only CPR until emergency services arrive.
